When someone in your town searches “handyman near me,” Google shows a map with a few businesses. If you’re not one of them, you’re invisible to a lot of people looking for exactly what you do.

That map listing is your Google Business Profile. It’s free, and you can set it up in an afternoon.

> **Short on time?** Want a real business number on your profile, set up for you, so your personal cell stays off Google? [See how](#done-for-you)

## What a Google Business Profile does

It’s your listing on Google Search and Maps: your name, phone number, hours, reviews, photos, and service area. Google says that when you [add and verify your profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/2911778), customers can find your business on Search and Maps, and adding or claiming it is free.

For a lot of trades, it’s where new customers find your phone number in the first place.

## Before you start

Have these ready:

- **Your business name,** exactly as customers know it. Don’t stuff keywords into it (“Joe’s Plumbing Best Plumber Springfield”). Google’s [guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) say extra info like services or locations in the name isn’t permitted and can get your profile suspended.
- **Your service area:** the towns or ZIP codes you cover.
- **A business phone number.** This one matters. Read the [phone number section](#phone-number) before you pick.
- **Your hours.**
- **A few good photos** of your work, your truck, or your team.

## Step-by-step setup

1. **Go to business.google.com/add** and sign in with a Google account. Use a business email if you have one.
2. **Click to add your business** and enter your business name.
3. **Choose your primary category.** Pick the most specific one that fits, like “Plumber” or “House cleaning service.” You can add more categories later.
4. **Say whether customers visit you.** Most trades don’t have a storefront. If you work at customers’ homes, you can be a service-area business.
5. **Set your service area** by city or ZIP code.
6. **Add your phone number and website** (if you have one).
7. **Pick a verification option** and follow the steps. Google offers different methods depending on your business.
8. **Finish your profile** once you’re in: hours, services, description, and photos.

**Already see your business on Maps?** Someone (or Google) may have created it. Search your business on Google Maps and choose the option to claim it.

## Working from home? Hide your address

If you run the business from home and don’t serve customers there, you don’t want your home address on Google, and Google agrees. Its [guidelines](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) say service-area businesses should hide their address, and give the example of a plumber running the business from home. Set yourself up as a **service-area business** and list the areas you serve instead.

## Which phone number to use

The number on your profile ends up everywhere. Google shows it, directories copy it, and spam callers scrape it. Once your personal cell is out there, you can’t really take it back.

That’s why a lot of owners use a [separate business phone number](https://gbpn.com/blog/separate-business-phone-number/) on their profile from day one. It also means your profile, your truck, your invoices, and your flyers all match.

## Make your profile actually work

A bare profile won’t do much. Fill it out:

- **Hours:** keep them accurate, including holidays.
- **Services:** list each one you offer, in plain words.
- **Description:** a few sentences on what you do and where. Write for people, not for Google.
- **Photos:** real job photos. Before and afters do well. Add new ones regularly.
- **Reviews:** one of the biggest things you control. Here’s [how to get more Google reviews](https://gbpn.com/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews/).

A simple description you can adapt:

> “\[Business Name\] is a family-owned \[trade\] serving \[towns\]. We handle \[service 1\], \[service 2\], and \[service 3\] for homeowners and small businesses. Call or text for a free estimate.”

## Be ready for the calls

A good profile means more calls, often from people who’ve never heard of you. If you’re on a job and they get your personal voicemail, a lot of them just call the next listing.

Set up a greeting that says your business name. Here are [business voicemail greeting examples](https://gbpn.com/blog/business-voicemail-greeting-examples/) you can copy.

## A business number for your profile, set up for you

**GBPN** gives you a separate business number that rings the cell you already carry, for **$30 a month total, taxes and fees included.**

- **Put it on Google, not your personal cell.**
- **Business calls announce themselves,** so you know it’s a customer before you answer.
- **We record your business greeting for you.**
- **Business hours,** so calls go to voicemail when you’re off.

A real person sets it up with you. **30-day money-back guarantee.**

## FAQ

**Is a Google Business Profile free?** Yes. Google says adding or claiming your profile is free.

**Can I have a Google Business Profile without a storefront?** Yes. Set it up as a service-area business and list the areas you serve.

**Do I need a website for a Google Business Profile?** No. A website helps, but your profile works without one.

**How long does verification take?** It depends on the method Google offers you. Some are quick, others take longer.

**Should I use my personal phone number on Google?** You can, but it ends up public for good. Many owners use a separate business number instead.
