You’ve done hundreds of jobs. Customers tell you you’re great. And your Google profile has… four reviews. One of them is your cousin.

Happy customers don’t leave reviews on their own. Most of them would, though, if you asked at the right moment and made it easy.

## Why reviews matter so much for local businesses

When someone searches “plumber near me,” they see a few businesses on the map with star ratings. Google says [reviews show next to your Business Profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474122) in Maps and Search. More recent, real reviews give people a reason to call you instead of the next name.

No profile yet? Start with our [Google Business Profile setup guide](https://gbpn.com/blog/google-business-profile-setup/).

## First, the rules (don’t skip this)

Google is strict here. From its own help page: offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for reviews is considered fake and misleading content and is strictly prohibited.

So:

- **Don’t** offer discounts, gift cards, or freebies for reviews.
- **Don’t** ask only happy customers through a filter that hides unhappy ones from the review link.
- **Don’t** write reviews for yourself or have friends review jobs they didn’t hire you for.
- **Do** ask real customers for honest reviews.

## Get your review link

Google lets you create a short link or QR code that takes customers straight to the review box. Find it in your Business Profile under the option to ask for reviews.

Save that link somewhere you can paste it fast, like a note on your phone. You’ll use it constantly.

## When to ask

Timing is everything. Ask when the customer is happiest:

- **Right when you finish,** while they’re looking at the fixed sink or the clean house.
- **When they thank you.** “Glad to hear it! Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review?”
- **After they pay,** in the same text as the receipt.

Then send the link the same day. Every day you wait, the odds go down.

## Copy-and-paste review requests

**Text, right after the job:**

> “Hi \[Name\], thanks again for having us out today! If you were happy with the work, would you mind leaving a quick Google review? It really helps a small business like ours. Here’s the link: \[review link\]”

**Shorter text:**

> “Thanks for choosing \[Business Name\]! If you have 30 seconds, a Google review would mean a lot: \[review link\]”

**Email, for bigger jobs:**

> “Hi \[Name\], it was great working on your \[project\]. If you’re happy with how it turned out, we’d be grateful for an honest Google review. It helps neighbors find us. \[review link\] Thanks again, \[Your Name\], \[Business Name\]”

**In person:**

> “Hey, one favor. If you’re happy with everything, a quick Google review really helps us out. Can I text you the link?”

Texts usually work best, because the customer can tap the link right then. Google notes customers need to be signed into a Google account to leave a review, so a quick tap on their phone is easiest.

## Make it a habit, not a campaign

One big push gets you a handful of reviews. A habit gets you a steady stream.

- **Ask every customer,** every job. Put it on your job checklist.
- **Put the QR code** on your [invoice](https://gbpn.com/blog/contractor-invoice-template/), business card, or a leave-behind card.
- **Add the link** to your invoice and receipt emails.
- **Train your crew** to mention it when they finish.

## Reply to reviews (yes, all of them)

Google recommends replying to reviews. It shows future customers you’re paying attention.

**Reply to a good review:**

> “Thanks so much, \[Name\]! Glad the new water heater is working great. Call us anytime.”

**Reply to a bad review:**

> “Hi \[Name\], I’m sorry about the delay on your job. That’s not the experience we want anyone to have. Please give me a call at \[business number\] so I can make it right. \[Your Name\]”

Keep replies short, polite, and specific. Don’t argue in public, and never share the customer’s private details.

## Text from your business number

When you text a review link from your personal cell, the text comes from a number that isn’t the one on your Google profile or your truck, and now your personal number is saved in one more customer’s phone.

A [separate business number](https://gbpn.com/blog/separate-business-phone-number/) means review requests come from the same number that’s on your Google profile and your truck. Customers recognize it, and it keeps your personal number personal.

## A business number you can text from

**GBPN** gives you a business number that rings the cell you already carry, for **$30 a month total, taxes and fees included.** Call and text customers from the business number with the app, and we record your business greeting for you.

## FAQ

**Can I offer a discount for a Google review?** No. Google prohibits offering incentives in exchange for reviews.

**How do I get my Google review link?** In your Business Profile, use the option to ask for reviews. Google gives you a link and a QR code to share.

**Should I respond to every review?** It’s a good habit. Google recommends replying, and it shows future customers you care.

**What do I do about a fake review?** If a review breaks Google’s policies, you can flag it from your Business Profile. Reply politely in the meantime.

**Why aren’t my reviews showing up?** Google filters some reviews. Its help center has a page on missing reviews if one you expected doesn’t appear.
