Google Voice is the first thing a lot of owners try. It’s free, it’s Google, and you can set it up in a few minutes.

For some businesses it’s all you need. For others it causes problems later. Here’s how to tell which one you are.

Where Google Voice trips up businesses

  • The free plan is personal. Google’s own words: “for personal, consumer use.”
  • Free numbers can be reclaimed if you don’t use them for 3 months.
  • Teams pay per person, plus Google Workspace for each person.
  • You set it up yourself. There’s no person walking you through it.

Is Google Voice free for businesses?

The basic plan is $0, but Google describes it as “for personal, consumer use.” For business, Google sells paid plans. Prices below are from Google’s own pages, checked October 20, 2026.

For one person (personal Gmail, US only)

  • Free: $0. Needs an existing mobile number.
  • Starter: $10 a month. Adds 24/7 support, and the number won’t be reclaimed for inactivity.
  • Standard: $20 a month. Adds a phone menu (auto attendant) and AI notes. Google showed 50% off for the first 6 months when we checked.

For teams (needs a paid Google Workspace plan)

  • Starter: $10 per user a month, up to 10 users.
  • Standard: $20 per user a month. Adds ring groups, so several people can answer one number.
  • Premier: $30 per user a month. Adds automatic call recording.

How much does a Google business phone number cost?

$10 a month for one person on Starter. For a team sharing one number, it’s $20 per person for Voice Standard plus Workspace for each person.

How do you register your business on Google Voice?

Solo owners buy Starter or Standard with a personal Gmail account. Teams add Voice to a paid Workspace account through the Workspace admin console.

Google Voice pros

  • Free or cheap for one person. Hard to beat on price.
  • Voicemail transcripts on every plan.
  • 24/7 Google support on paid plans.
  • Desk phone support on paid plans, if you have an office.
  • Works great if you already run on Google Workspace.

Is there a downside to Google Voice?

A few, depending on your plan:

  • Free plan rules. Personal use, community forum help, and the number can be reclaimed after 3 months without use. (Voice policy)
  • Team costs add up. Every person who answers needs a Voice license and Workspace.
  • Do-it-yourself setup. You or your Workspace admin configure everything.
  • Leaving costs a little. Google charges $3 to unlock a Google-assigned number so you can move it. (Port your number)

Can people see your real number if you use Google Voice?

When you call or text from the Google Voice app, people see your Google Voice number. If you call from your phone’s regular dialer through your carrier, they see your real number. (Caller ID help)

What are the alternatives to Google Voice?

  • Stick with Google Voice if you’re one person, price matters most, and you’re happy doing setup yourself.
  • A per-user app like Quo or Grasshopper if you want more features and don’t mind per-person pricing. See cheapest business phone number options.
  • A flat-price business line like GBPN if several people share one number, or you want it set up for you.
